President Rashid: IDP’s Situation Is Unacceptable and Unjustifiable
On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, the
President of the Republic of Iraq, Abdullatif Jamal Rashid met with the Deputy
Special Representative for Iraq in the United Nations Assistance Mission for
Iraq (UNAMI) and Resident Coordinator who serves as the United Nations
Humanitarian Coordinator, Ghulam Mohammad Isaczai alongside his delegation, at
the Baghdad Palace. The Meeting was attended by Minister of Migration and
Displacement, Evan Faeq Jabro.
The file of the Internally
Displaced People (IDP) was discussed during the meeting, and His Excellency
President Rashid emphasised that efforts being made should be strengthened at
every level to find viable, long-term solutions to the issues of the IDPs, and
ultimately, ensure their return to homes. This humanitarian file should not be
taken lightly, tangible steps must be taken between the relevant international
organisations and governmental agencies, HE added.
There is a need to complete the
rebuilding and reconstruction of Sinjar, with a focus on the importance of rendering
public services, the President stressed, saying that the Presidency of the
Republic stands ready to support these efforts and further coordinate with
international agencies to ensure the return of the displaced people who are
still living in harsh conditions. Major infrastructure projects in Sinjar are
needed to be completed as this plays a key role in addressing the issue of
displaced people, HE added. And he asserted that he is ready to visit Sinjar
again to examine the situation and to be in touch with what has been provided
for the population over there while saying that we are looking for tangible
results.
Displaced people are still living
in the camps, in harsh conditions, years after the end of the war against
Daesh, Iraqi President Rashid said, while noting that this is unsustainable and
unjustifiable.
The President confirmed that
displaced people should be allowed to return homes as soon as possible, and to
do so, the right conditions and secure and stable situation must be ensured to
allow them to live with dignity and in safety. Any issue that hinders the
progress toward achieving these goals should be removed, HE noted.
The delegation briefed His
Excellency President Rashid about Sinjar's situation and said that several
houses, a police station, and a municipality of Sinjar have been built.
